Do you want to change your home – or even just a small space in your home – but you have no idea where to start? Do you feel overwhelmed because you have so much to do, or do you feel that you don’t have the experience or tools to make it a beautiful space?
Yup, join the club. I felt that way once too.
Hi! I’m Malene (pronounced May-lean) – strange name, I know. Well, it’s actually pretty standard for Scandinavia, but for Canada and the United States, people always have to pronounce it once or twice before getting it right. Now that you’ve got my name down, let me just say – I’ve been in that situation before. I would have an idea in my head, have inspiration ripped out of magazines and hundreds of photos on my phone, and yet I would end up with a space that looked completely different.
Talk about defeat!
Many years ago – well, back in 2002 to be exact – I was faced with a fork in the road. Do I pursue my passion for writing or do I pursue my passion for interior design? I had passed all entrance exams for both and even did the college interviews, and both doors were open. I ultimately chose writing at University level, but whenever I wanted to redo my home when I got my own space, I often regretted not sticking with interior design.
I mean, I was the kind of people who would rush home from school to watch Trading Spaces on TLC! Remember that show? (If you don’t know it, it’s a show where two neighbours trade homes for 48 hours to redo a room in each other’s homes with the help of an interior designer and a carpenter. This is actually where Ty Pennington got his start as a young lad.)
In 2009, I graduated with a Master’s degree in Language Psychology and decided to pursue a career as an entrepreneur. And after spending 7 years working with major websites in regards to content creation, traffic generation, and blogging, I felt it was time for a change. And a change I got – I found out in the summer of 2016 that I was pregnant with my son! And within two months, I had enrolled in school again. If I was ever going to do something about my passion for interior design, this was it!
At the end of 2016 with a college-level diploma in my hand for interior design (and two additional diplomas in Photography and Art Appreciation), I decided to leave the tech space behind. I needed to focus on creating a business I was passionate about with a baby by my side. And thus began partnerships with trusted design companies, my own collections and my design magazine, The Interior Dialogue Magazine.
